Brunch at Red Stag

Sunday, May 30, 2021

Dale and I hit the Red Stag for brunch again. I started with a Bloody Mary.

I got the corned beef hash and Dale got the vegetable hash. So delicious.

We talked about school winding down for me and him gearing up to go to the Island. It's such a hard time for both of us and it feels like it's on steroids this year due to the exhaustion where experiencing from the pandemic.

Mother's Day 2021

Sunday, May 9, 2021

Dale and I took Mom to Red Stag for dinner tonight. She was excited to go to a restaurant for dinner. When she goes out with friends it tends to be for lunch.

I, of course, started with a brandy Old-Fashioned while Dale and Mom both had merlot.

We started with a relish tray which featured their pickled vegetables. I was leaning toward ordering the fried chicken for dinner which is their Sunday night special however I went with the prosciutto carbonara linguine which was simply divine. Dale ordered the chicken breast and Mom got salmon. They both said their entrees were excellent.

Dale and Mom shared some carrot cake for dessert. Red Stag has the BEST carrot cake. It's dense yet very smooth tasting. I got a Pink Squirrel. This is the first time I've gotten one there that wasn't very good. It wasn't blended well (lots of big ice chunks) and not very flavorful.

Weather-wise I don't think we could have gotten a much better day for this time of year. It's always nice to see the sun and I think it made it to the lower-60s today. Mom said Sam and Pete both called her this year so all-in-all I think she had a pretty lovely Mother's Day.

Dale did too!

Dining Out at Red Stag Supper Club

Saturday, February 27, 2021

Well, we had such a good time eating out last Saturday that we decided to try it again tonight. Red Stag Supper Club here we come.

They closed at the beginning of the lockdown in February 2020 and didn't reopen until a week ago. Many other restaurants reopened in June of 2020.

I've been looking forward to their Wisconsin style Old Fashioned since I made the reservation last week. I had two of 'em and they were awesome. Dale had red wine.

We started with the meat, cheese, and relish tray. It was all great especially the beets and the pear chutney.

For dinner Dale had a grilled salmon fillet which he loved. I had a prosciutto carbonara linguine and I absolutely adored it. It came with parmesan, peas, egg, and cream.

Matthew, our waiter, took really good care of us. He told us he hadn't worked as much during the pandemic but was obviously so excited to be back at it again. He was attentive, pleasant, and just plain wonderful. You could tell he was so happy to be working again.

For dessert Dale got the carrot cake which was heaven; very dense, not over sweet including the frosting. I got the Grasshopper. Now I've only ever had this drink with ice cream. This was more like a Brandy Alexander and used cream instead. It was amazing and I loved how they lined the rim with Giradelli powdered chocolate.

We listened to Bachelor Pad Royal from the Ultra Lounge series to get us into the mood and atmosphere of the restaurant. Interestingly enough the music played at the restaurant was all 1980s hits: Xanadu, Gypsy, Rock the Casbah, Flashdance, all tons of fun. We both reminisced about the 80s, especially the summer of '83 which was the first summer Dale lived in Minneapolis and the first summer I held a job at Dayton's Department Store. We were both off of work at 10:30 and probably crossed paths on the while waiting for the bus on Nicollet outside Dayton's.

It's so nice to be able to eat indoors at restaurants again. Dale's feeling okay about it due to the precautions the businesses are taking. I feel the same way and I've also had the first of the two doses of the vaccine which also helps ease my mind. In just a week we've done Jax and Red Stag, two of our favorites, due to pent up demand.

Red Stag Supperclub - Brunch

Sunday, October 21, 2018

Dale and I took John C. to the Red Stage for brunch. I got the bottomless Bloody Mary and the eggs benedict. John got the French toast and Dale got the farmer's breakfast. As usual, it was all very tasty and good to see John. He fell against his piano just before we picked him up. Sadly he cut his nose because of the fall. We got him bandaged up and when we got to the restaurant they were kind enough to give us an ice pack. John was feeling better in no time.

Red Stag with Mom

Sunday, September 10, 2017
Dale, Mom, and I all have birthdays that fall within 6 weeks of each other. This year we consolidated the celebrations into one and headed to the Red Stag Supper Club for brunch. Dale and I both had the vegetable breakfast hash (although I had them add corned beef to mine) and Mom had the eggs benedict. Mom had never been before and she loved it. Also, I had an Old Fashioned. Surprise.

Anniversary at Red Stag

Recently Dale and I celebrated our anniversary at The Red Stag Supper Club.

The service there is always friendly and our server, Claudia, was no exception to the rule. I started with an Old Fashioned cocktail. The Red Stag's default way of preparing it is the Wisconsin way with brandy as opposed to bourbon. Having spent as much time as I have in Wisconsin during the last however many summers I'm partial  to mine with brandy.

We're both fans of the Red Stag's relish tray so when dining there we usually start with that. It includes vegetables pickled in house which can vary from visit to visit. This time it featured pickled carrots, green beans, olives, and what looked to be a lighter version of beets. The vegetables were crunchy, tangy, and delicious.

For dinner, Dale ordered one of the specials, a risotto with shrimp which looked delicious. I went with the roasted half chicken which came with a swiss chard souffle, ratatouille, and chicken jus. It was perfectly done.

Dessert was their awesome carrot cake. Dale doesn't usually go for sweet but carrot cake is something he can't resist, especially The Red Stag's.

The decor of the Red Stag is charming and not (as many supper clubs are) overly kitschy. I've heard that many of the materials used for the restaurant were salvaged by hand including the bar top which is made of marble, tabletops made from doors, and upholstery for the booths made of recycled cassette tapes.* The atmosphere always adds to the experience.

I believe the Red Stag Supper Club will be celebrating it's 10 year anniversary of opening this coming November.  We may have to stop in to help them celebrate.

Red Stag Supper Club

Recently Dale's cousin Dianne visited us for the weekend and we took her to the Red Stag Supper Club. I had a couple Old Fashioneds which they automatically make with Brandy - the Wisconsin way. For dinner I ordered the schweinshaxe which was a new discovery for me. It was delicious. It came with spaetzle, Brussels sprouts, and pickled apple. Divine. It melted right off the bone.

Red Stag - Dale

Tuesday, November 24, 2015

Dale waits in anticipation for food and drink at the Red stag Supper Club. Thanksgiving break begins tomorrow for both me and Dale. For being just a two day work week it was something we both found to be a fast and painful ride through hell. Despite that, this ended up being such a lovely evening. Dale mentioned it was the right place with the right food. I added it was also with the right people. We had such a fun time together.

Red Stag - Me

Tuesday, November 24, 2015

Me being a goof. After I tied the napkin around my neck Dale asked if I was trying to be some kind of bon vivant. Sure. I guess the brandy old fashioned was starting to work. All part of my master plan for world domination.

I really appreciate the relaxed atmosphere of the Red Stag. By the way, Dale was pretty embarrassed when the flash on my camera went off while taking a picture of my old fashioned (I didn't mean for it to). Oh well.

The last picture shows the first place Dale and I sat at our first ever time at the Red Stag in 2007(?).

If you squint, you can see the guy in the bottom right corner of the first picture turning around for the camera. I didn't notice him until making the photo collage. Maybe he's Santa Claus taking a little break before the big season kicks in. I picture him riding in on his big ol' motorcycle.

By the way, I ordered the beef stroganoff. It was awesome. I was excited to see it back on the menu. It must be seasonal because when we were in a couple weeks ago I didn't see it. Dale ordered the fish special. Said it was the best meal he's had at Red Stag yet! That's sayin' something since the food is always fantastic.

Brunch - Red Stag Supper Club

Great brunch with Dale at the Red Stag Supper Club.  Dale had an egg scramble with sliced turkey and spinach. I had the prime rib eggs benedict. Both came with has browns. Sound good? It was!
They also make an awesome Bloody Mary. It came with a beer chaser - very Minnesotan.

Red Stag Supper Club

Saturday, July 18, 2015

Last night Dale and I dined at the Red Stag Supper Club and what a supper it was! We've been once before in February or March of 2013 and both had the beef stroganoff (delicious). I started with and old-fashioned for a cocktail and asked for brandy instead of bourbon (the Wisconsin way) and was told that that's how they make 'em. Dale had some wine. They weren't messing around with the old-fashioned. It was great. We started with their relish tray which included picked yellow beets, pickled turnips, pickled carrots, and hard boiled eggs. It was all divine and perfectly sized for two people to split. For dinner I had the 8oz. New York strip which came with mashed potatoes, green beans, and wild mushrooms on the side (all divine) and Dale got the fish of the day which was salmon (also perfectly prepared - he gave me a taste). Our server, Andrea, checked on us periodically and at one point I told her that I thought the restaurant doesn't mess around - it's just great food. She recommended the the carrot cake for dessert and Dale couldn't have been more pleased as it's his favorite. He loved it and I did too. Next to Mom's, it's the best carrot cake I've ever had. It was a beautiful Minneapolis summer night and we took a walk through Nordeast for that reason in addition to being incredibly full!
